UK Aerospace Industry set path to UK economy

The ADS’s 2017 Aerospace Outlook, based on the latest annual figures, shows the UK aerospace industry employing 120,000 people and supporting a further 118,000 jobs indirectly, from very large multinational entities to small entrepreneurial firms and fast-paced start-ups.

The industry benefits UK regions too. With its grouping of major airports, the south- east of England is a major hub, as is Birmingham, famous for its industrial might, but – perhaps less expectedly – the south-west of England is also a significant aerospace cluster.

“The south-west of England is the largest aerospace cluster in Europe,” says Miles Carden at Aerohub, an enterprise zone at Cornwall Airport Newquay.

“This is not only good news for people employed directly by the large aerospace companies such as Boeing, but also for smaller SMEs such as designers.

The region is home to 15 large aerospace companies as well as a network of world-class supply chain companies, making it the “beating heart” of the wider UK sector, according to Barry Warburton, an aerospace sector specialist at Invest Bristol & Bath.
